Hi
When I insert a project into a consolidated project, the name is often incorrect or nothing at all is shown. The process does not appear consistent either. It usually requires the information to be entered manually.
Is this normal Microsoft behaviour or can it be avoided?
Thanks

By "consolidated project", I presume you mean "Master project" (the more commonly used term of reference).

Now ...

1. What version are you using? (Why does almost everyone keep this a secret?)
2. What project file names are you using?
3. How are you putting them into the master project file?
4. What, exactly, are you seeing?
5. What, exactly, is incorrect?

Many apologies for the lack of info, however, many thanks for the specific method used to chastise me! Are you a teacher?

The version is MSP2000.
The Project File names tend to be Number then name (eg 9999 WXYZ)
I am inserting them using the normal method (Insert, Project) and linked.
In some cases nothing at all appears in the line where you would expect to see the number & name. The project is inserting okay, and I have put the correct summary info into the properties section. Occasionally, it appears to get another file name from somewhere but it also does this when printing some reports (in the header).
Is this simply normal MS Crapness?

Thanks in advance

Here is today's lesson. Please pay close attention, class. <very big grin>

Every project file has two names:

1. The file name. You see this when you view file names in a folder or during the Open/Close dialogs.

2. The title. You access this by opening the project file and then clicking on File | Properties | Summary tab. Look for the field named "Title".

On an inserted project, you see the Title -- and not the file name -- for each inserted project file.

You've been a very attentive class. You can all go home early!

Supplementary information now available.
It would appear, if a project programme is created using an old project or template and the summary info is not input immediately, the problems stated above occur (i.e. the inserted programe always defaults back to the orignal summary info.). Reboots etc seem to make no difference and our IT people don't appear to be able to fix it either. Hmmmm.....strange!

I have never spent any time trying to find out when Title is updated (and when it isn't).

It's no big deal. You don't even have to open the file. Under WinXP, simply position your cursor over the file name for a few seconds and bubble help will pop up showing you, among other things, the "Title". If it's what you want, move to the next file otherwise fix it.
