i want to have a merged form letter which contains the date the form was merged.

word allows you to insert a static date as text, or a dynamic date as a field.

unfortunately, in the former case you get the date the merge template was created, and in the latter the date the field was last updated, which could be the last time it was printed or saved, not the first time.

i don't want to use vb for obvious reasons.

any ideas?

You've got a date in your mailmerge main document. Delete it. Replace it with:

Insert-Field-Date and time-CREATE DATE

Save the file as a template. Hit File-New to use the template, it creates a new document. Hence, create date becomes the day you did the mailmerge.
