Hey folks,

Anyone know of script so that a db can be added to via email? I've had a look around and apart from something Mambo specific, can't find anything.

Yes, I know there are security issues, but they can be kludged around.

Thanks in advance

i was recently thinking of something similar: so that users could contribute to a forum thread via email rather than having to log on to a server.

i never got past the thought process though.

I believe that some listservers have the ability to create a web page of threads. this implies some good email management and potentially it would not be difficult to insert some sql code instead of whatever storage routines the listserver is using.

alternatively it is not difficult to write a small app that polls a pop or imap mail box, parses the incoming mails and writes to a db. this is the direction i will be taking but i'm afraid it's not on my schedule of works for another couple of months!

Certain MTAs also support the ability for an email to be delivered to a program rather than a mailbox. (sendmail, qmail and postfix all do this, for example, and there's likely others) The MTA invokes the script and passes it the text of the e-mail (including all headers) through stdin. This kind of thing is commonly done with perl scripts, but there's no reason why it can't be done with PHP, too.
