Using Word 97, I want to insert a character (grade, not a number) in a table cell based on the value of another cell using a nested if function of the form:

=if(av>79, 'A', if(av>59, 'B', if(av>49, 'C', 'D')))

where av is a bookmark or cell containing an integer, and 'A', 'B', 'C' and 'D' are the grade values.

Any suggestions?

thanks, Dik

Help makes it sound as if the IF is to be used during a mail merge. Is that what you want? easiest fix is to do the work in excel, copy the range, then paste special, paste Excel object, and make sure link box is checked. It will work

Thanks, it works...
