Insert Autotext is greyed out

Have you checked that a template that contains autotext (or contains autotext formatted to any required styles) is selected in the AutoCorrect dialog box\AutoText tab?
Go to Insert\Autotext\Autotext
Check that the Look in field near the bottom of the dialog box reads: All Active Templates

Todd: Close Word, find and rename normal.dot to abnormal.dot and see if that helps.
