Hi,

I'm trying to run smit on our AIX 4.3 server and it comes back with the following error:

1800-093 Could not open SMIT log file:
./smit.log

I am not sure if one of the smit files is corrupt. I've checked to see if the relevant smit files exist and they are all present. Could this problem be related to disk space as I also keep getting an input/output error when I try and use vi:

"/var/tmp/Ex09074" There is an input or output error.

Does anyone know why this happens?

I've checked the disk space on the filesystems and I still have 19544 (512 blocks) available. Is this enough disk space for creating temporary files?

Filesystem 512-blocks Free %Used Mounted on
/dev/hd4 32768 13416 60% /
/dev/hd2 704512 19544 98% /usr
/dev/hd9var 32768 27032 18% /var
/dev/hd3 32768 30320 8% /tmp
/dev/hd1 32768 31472 4% /home
/dev/informix 524288 114512 79% /usr/informix
/dev/usr1 32768 25784 22% /usr1
/dev/softw 2048000 1253784 39% /softw

Thanking you AIX guru's in advance

Hi,
run errpt command. Probably you have problem with hdisk0.
Regards Boris

Thanks Boria,

You hit the nail on it's head!! - Problems with hard disk0

I'll speak to our hardware expert to check the cables and try a file system recovery using fsck utility. Any other tips?

Hi,
run errpt -a -j <first collumn>|more
to see details which filesystems need to be recovered:
for example
errpt -a -j CD546B25 | more.
fsck will recovery filesystem when it is not mounted.
But in your case it can be / (root) and /var. You can
not umount it.
After you check cable you can try reboot your box.
Regards Boris.

Hi Boria,

I've just done that and the it seems that the following filesystems need to be recovered:

/dev/informix
/dev/hd4
/dev/softw

AIX is really not my field especially when it comes to hardware problems. Is it okay to run the command
fsck -p <filesystem> to automatically correct any errors?

Hi teklid

The fsck command with -p flag will fix only minor problems.
You can try ! no problem...if it is not effective...u can use -y flag to fix severely damaged file systems non interactively .

Thanks Sushveer,

I shall check it out. Although I think one of the disks need replacing. Our server is over 10 years old and definately needs upgrading.

Hi Teklid,
/ev/hd4 is / filesystems. You cannot umount it and therefore fsck will sey about problem only but not resolve it. Contact sysadmin.
