Hello

I'm new to Filemaker.

Is it possible to put an input mask on an input field. For exemple, I want to input a phone number ;

(999) 999-9999

I don't want to put the ( ), space and -

Merci

Salut

Sorry. I use ver. 6.0

Thanks

Make a field phoneFilter_ct (calculation, text) =

"(" & Left(Abs(TextToNum(phoneNumber));3) & ") " & Middle(Abs(TextToNum(phoneNumber));4;3) & "-" & Right(Abs(TextToNum(phoneNumber));4)

where phoneNumber is your field...

...and put this field on top of your phoneNumber field, make it transparent, remove it from the tab-list.

Users will tab (or click) on the phoneNumber field, and the display will be the filterfield...

For JeanW: I tried your suggestion but can not quite get it to come out the way I want. Here were my steps:
-Made a new calculated field as you suggested. Viewing it separately and it looks okay.
-Placed a new field over PhoneNum field, assigned it the new calculated field, and made it transparent.
-When I go to Browse View, both numbers show up and overlap each other. If the calculated field is in front then clicking window tells me it is not modifiable (as expected).
-A previous Mask for SSN had me make the calculation non-transparent and in front. This looked okay but I couldn't modify the number. I did not try disabling the tab.

I really would like to be able to modify the underlying number then display in the Masked format. Where am I going wrong here?

I was ‘wrong’, sorry, forgot a word, made it NOT transparent....
The mask field has to be on top (bring forward) of the regular field, but before you do that, put it half over that field, it’s easy to arrange the tab order, and make it not enterable via field format.
In layout make new taborder, where you remove the Maskfield from the order.
Still in layout mode, move the Maskfield to the final place.

If you use the taborder, you will go to the regular field, to enter a value, whereafter the value in the Maskfield will be showed.
If you want a samplefile with all possibilities discussed here, to take them apart, just let me know.

Hello.

So, what you try to tell me, is that you can't put an input mask on Filemaker input field.

In foxpro or Visual Basic, you can define an input mask on the input and the user see :

(___)___-___

no trick, no formula.

Is it possible in fileMaker ?

Nro

Not in lower than FM 7...

With a formula you can, in layout with fields you can...

FileMaker is NOT FoxPro, is Not Access...

We can do things in FileMaker, where FoxPro,Access, 4D, Oracle etc users only can dream of...

Hello.

Well... yes Jean.

I only try to find a way to do certain task with Filemaker that is natural in other language. I don't want to bug you with simple task, but I think it's important.

Now I want to thank you for your time and you have to know that your input is very usefull.

Hi Nro,

you don't bug me....:)

After several years I saw often new users who're trying to use FM as it was an other program...and than say that FM 'is no good'.
I was only pointing to the fact that FM is FM, nothing more and nothing less.

Dig into the possibilies, try things out, ask questions...there are many good people on this forum, willing to share their knowledge...and finally you will looove FM.

...and thanks for the star...appreciate..

Keep on FileMaking, hope to 'see' you back soon...
