Inline graphics shifting out of place

I have a 2 column document that contains graphics whose width are the same as a single column. I'm placing them inline with the text.

The problem I'm running into is that whenever any changes are made to the content (ie. text/images are added/removed), any graphics that are sitting flush top against the right column jump down several inches. When I select them and tap the arrow key once it jumps back to the correct position, without the huge gap between the text.

Any ideas on what is causing this? It's a huge hassle to manually reposition graphics that have shifted.

Try "Anchored Objects" under the Object menu. Extremely handy.
I've seen it done, though I've never had a need for it myself.
