Recently my cartridges stoped working so I bought 2 reman black HP 45 cartridges. I soaked the old ones in the water first (just the tips) to see if I get more ink out of them. That didn't work and they were throwing ink error so I tossed them. The new ones still have ink light flashing so I can't print. I tried a new HP 78 color cartridge (past due exp date) with both of these black HP 45s and still getting the error.

I tried chip reset procedures where you tape four contacts on left and right top of the cartridges and that didn't work too. I have USB connection to the printer but there is no way to check what error it is throwing. Can I do anything to make this work. Originally HP 23 was the right color cartridge but it seems that HP 78 is the same part?

Please help, I'm, about to throw this printer away

Considering this is an old unit, There probably are not any "new" cartridges being made. Shelf life has taken it's toll on a lot of products that stores still put on the shelf anyway. Ink is specific to the unit. The 45 & 23 are this ones. 78 is not a "new" replacement.
Suggest you take the printer in to the store, and force them to open and install the products.

Appreciate your help. Thank you

So will HP78 work in this unit or not? Is that my problem? Both HP78 and HP23 look identical. Once the cartridge stops working but no ink error, I guess I should just keep it so I can print black only?

No, the inks are only the 23&45
Check the dates on the box before you buy. Demand newest product only!
