inittab corrupt

Guys,

When the machine boots, it goes to single user mode & prompts that /etc/inittab is corrupt. What can I do about it?

simpliest - restore from backup

Or if you know what the inittab should look like, you might be able to edit the file and try to fix the corruption. But the safest is what dblair says.
