After a recent new software installation, I find that WIN 98 is initializing with the WAVE 'MUTE' flag set 'ON', so there's no sound unless I call up the volume control window and reset it to 'OFF'. Where is this initial condition set so that I can change it back the way it was (all audio initializes to 'ON')?

Just in case you need it to see what is running on startup:

START
RUN
type msconfig in box
Click on Startup tab

I hope I never get too old or arrogant to learn something new!

Here are the start time tasks. Except for realtray, all were there before.
scanregistry
task monitor
suystem tray
powerprofiler
vettray
quickfinder scheduler
realtray
loadpowerprofile
scheduling agent
perfect print
event reminder

It's probably realtray causing the headache (one of many if you ask me).
Open up Real Player, select the View, Preferences, and look around for "Start Center". Disable it, and ignore the stupid warning.
Restart.
You may have to reset your mixer controls one more time. Cheers,
Jim
