I've got a supervisor who wants a DID to appear on her phone, and her assistant's phone. Got it.
They want a mailbox associated with that DID/Line appearance/Ext. Got it.

Now all we need to do is initialize it.

When we go in to her phone and do Feature 981, I'm pretty sure all we are doing is trying to deal with her mailbox.

Doesn't the initialization have to be done from the user's extension/intercom?

I'm wondering if I should change her ext/intercom to be that DID's Ext, initialize the mailbox and then change it back?

I haven't really done much mailbox initialization - is there a way to do it from somebody else's phone (without it being a set's primary ext?

It is a simple answer but do you have documentation on the VM? You can find it on the BCM. Download a user and reference guide and you can find your answer there. Yes, you can do it from another phone. When a user presses F981 and gets the password prompt you can press * and enter the mailbox number and password and press OK or #. You will do yourself a great favor by looking into the documentation.

Man - if only you knew how much Nortel documentation I've consumed...
I don't think the issue is that I don't read it - I think the issue is that I read too much of it, and then I get overwhelmed! I just turn to this forum so I can get an easy break once in awhile.

I actually contribute heavy hitting feedback directly to Nortel on their documentation - I hope I'm not the only one who ever comes across a publication that lacks what you really want to know? The Nortel guys in my region hear my name and they cringe - nobody likes dealing with the over-the-top perfection I expect in their documents. Take the 1140E - I just found a document that says you can map 12 features to the keys. Can you? No! Well, maybe. In fact you can - IF it is connected to a CS1000. But only 6 if it is connected to a BCM. Little stuff like this prompts me to FEED-BACK. How does Nortel look (let alone you) if you have to tell your customer (who read that 12 feature key business) that it can't be done? They just start getting a bad Nortel taste in their mouth. And I think it could and should be prevented with better documentation.

Anyway - between CC 6.0 (w/Multi-Media), CS1000, CallPilot, BCM - I can hardly keep up. Believe me - I appreciate your school of hard knocks - especially right now. I'll give it a try first thing when I get a chance. But now I'm just getting to turn in after dealing with a faulty Symposium PEP all night.

Thanks for the solution - I hope I can return the favor!

I am a little embarrased I didn't find that...

Don't worry about it. You have to understand that most guys are not like you. They don't want to search for the answer. Some like the easy way out and there are times when you don't have the time to search. Believe me I understand the problems with Nortel's docs. I have searched for answers only to find that the only way to get the answer is to test or find out from someone who has done it.

You can INI a Vmail from any phone. F981, Mailbox Number, Password.

You can INI a Vmail from any phone. F981, THEN PRESS * , then you CallPilot will ask you what mailbox number (& password). But you can't do just any mailbox without hitting the *.

Otherwise, you'll only be dealing with the mailbox of the extension you are calling from.

Turns out I could initialize the mailbox (after hitting *), but when calling in to it, I still got the 'sorry, but you've reached a mailbox that has not been initialized yet' recording.

Keep in mind, this is a DID that only appears on two phones - as a target line appearance. I couldn't figure out what was preventing it from becoming enabled, so I built a new set and made the extension/target line the mailbox ext.

So, now it works. It reminds me of the PBX where only key 0 is delivered to the voicemail system (without custom configuration).

Anyway - I thought it would be over with just inserting the * in the login sequence - turns out it became a little more puzzling than I thougt it was going to be.

Thanks again for the feedback!
