I'm just learning about initialization files, and I am slightly confused. The books I'm reading speak of the $HOME/.profile, $HOME/.login, $HOME/.cshrc, etc. files. But on my Intel system (Solaris 8) I've got three more files in the /etc/skel directory that get copied to new user's folders: $HOME/local.login, $HOME/local.profile, and $HOME/local.cshrc. What are these files preceded by "local?"

Thanks! Mike

Oh! Never mind... I just found the answer to my own question! Mike

the /etc/skel directory is used when a new account is created, when a new home directory is created. the automatic scripts copy the files from /etc/skel to set up a standard login for everyone.

From what I understand, these files (local.*) are copied to the user's home directory and are templates. And depending on what shell the user is using, the template is modified and renamed accordingly. Correct? Mike

as far as i'm aware they are just copied to the users home directory (as the hidden versions) whatever their shell is, if the home directory is created using the tools.

May be wrong though, we don't generally use the tools around here :)

By using the tools, do you mean useradd -d <home_dir> -m ? That's what I used to set up these users, and they have all of the template files in their home directories. Mike

Both, the useradd command and admintool does copy the sample startup files to users home directories when the users are created.
