INIT.ORA parameter definitions

Is there anything in Oracle's packaged documentation or anything online that gives a better explanation of the INIT.ORA file and its parameters? I ask aske we (my company) has had to make subtle changes to its parameters in the past without fully understanding the limitations of said changes and how they affect the startup of the Oracle database.
I've checked Oracle's Metalink Knowledge Base but wasn't able to obtain much from it.

Any info or leads anyone has would be appreciated.

I don't have my documents with me right now, but I think you are looking for either the Administrator's Guide or Server Reference Manual.
