Hi there,

I have my Redhat 7.3 install boot to a default init level 3. If I then need to run XWindows I just type "startx" Recently I have noticed that if I type "init 5" then Redhat initiates a couple of additional resources and then automatically starts XWindows.

The question I have is this: Is it bad practice to run XWindows at level 3?

Thanks in advance, Glenn

Runlevel 3 is the default. It's pretty much standard practice to use it for servers.

Here is a description from RedHat on runlevels. This link is specifically for 7.2, but the runlevels don't change much.
