We received an Executone from one of our clients and we would like to use it for our phone system. It is from 1997. It has an 8 station 4CO card in it as well. the card is then wired to a 66 block. this was done but the orignaly phone installers in 97. problem one is each station is labeled on the 66 block to have only 2 pairs butv on the phones the connection shows 3 pairs. i punch the the 2 pair and i get nothing. reversed the order and i get nothing. the other issue is that the power staus light, after about 3 min., blinks every 3 secs or so on and off. Is this an indication of it not working properly? I have the manual but the manual shows these magical punch down blocks where you simply plug the stations into the blocks that have 3 pairs all wired up, however all the wiring diagrams show that the phones only need 2 pair wire. Is there some way to convert the 4 pair into 6, is this other pair just power for the phone. I will look at the manual again, it is huge!.

thanks for any advice

First, the Executone phones use two pairs only - wired with standard USOC RJ14 configuration. While color codes are standard, all polarity must be correct. On the 66-block, first station is white/blue + white/orange pairs, second station is white/green + white/brown pairs etc.

You didn't say which system it is... from that era it could be an IDS (probably the case if the manual is so big) or a Medley (re-branded ESI w/IDS telephones). If IDS, it is possible that the F screen programming (System port assignments) has been wiped out - so even if the phone is wired correctly, it won't function because it has no logical station assignment. Think of it as a PC on a TCP/IP lan without an IP address (and no DHCP server).

To program, you'll need a PC with communications software that emulates a Televideo (TVI) 950 terminal (standard hyperterminal does NOT work, but the "advanced" version does). Or an old terminal that emulates a TVI950.

This forum doesn't do much Executone - you may want to check out
as they have an active Executone forum. Good luck!

Thanks guys i will use this info.

One point of information: mforrence -- and everyone

The USOC RJ14 is a wiring configuration for two Tip/Ring analogue dialtones on specific modular jack hardware.

It is NOT a means to connect proprietary telsets to KSUs or data equipment!

People need to stop abusing the "RJ" designations!

I suppose that you're correct in that, while we are inernally wiring the jack per USOC RJ14 spec, the actual station cable is not wired in parallel onto two CO lines. I should have said 'Jack is internally wired similar to RJ14 arrangement with station cable terminated on individual station port' - this way I'm not calling it an RJ14, but denoting the wiring scheme. Seems easier to refer to the RJ14 standard vs trying to describe the actual connections. I'll consider my nose smacked with a rolled-up newspaper.

I will wholeheartedly agree that it's "RJ abuse" when folks call any 8-pin modular jack an RJ45. I don't know that I've every acutally used an RJ45 - tip and ring on pins 5 & 4 with programming resistor across 7 & 8...
