Hi I am using a dell laptop Win 2K and i was connecting to the net/email using my nokia phone as the modem. this because i am on a remote site and can't use landlines.
It all worked fine till i had to format due to a crash. Now i cant get it to dial up. The port is enabled fine and works fine for transferring files. It also sees the phone ok and tells me what it is.
I seem to remember that before the crash if i looked in the dial up properties it gave me the choice of connecting through the onboard modem (which still works) or i had the choice of 2 infra red ports, one worked and the other didn't.
I now only have one infra red port listed and it is the one that does not work. i have changed the port settings in the bios but still no joy. I have changed the properties in device manager for the port, again nothing. I have also disabled it and uninstalled then back again but nothing again.

Any help appreciated

Steve

I am not sure why you would at first have two IR ports listed at first and now only one, (was this found int the device manager or in Dial-up properties?) but I would encourage you to check the IRQ settings.

Because modems use serial interfaces, you will find that you have to be careful how you assign IRQ 3 & 4 to serial ports.

I would recommend that you make sure that the IRQ you are using for the IR port is not the same for any other serial device on your machine such as the on board modem. This will reuslt in a conflict. By default com 1 uses IRQ4 & com2 uses IR3.

When you say that you can transfer files - what exactly do you mean?

The way i wrote that is confusing, there was only ever one infrared port and it was listed in device manager as normal.
It only ever showed up in the dial up properties for the tiscali connection, both listings of it were not the same (i can't remember the difference) but only one of them worked when you checked the box to tell it which connection to use.
Tranfer files from one laptop to another, nothing to do with the phone, i only mentioned it to shoe that the port was working.

Did you check the IRQ settings for the IR port, COM 1 and 2? What are they? Do you have a serial cable to connect your phone to the laptop?

When you said that you can transfer files - what exactly do you mean? Between what devices are you tranferring files and ehat kind of files? (is it the address/contact list between the phone and the laptop?)

If this is the case, then you need to troubleshoot how the PC communicates with the modem on your phone.
