Is there a way of defragging the IS without the recomended amount of space on the exchange server?

Well we dont have the current disk space on the server itself and we dont have a server on the network available. Management isnt willing for the time being to purchace a new server or harddrives. We are running out of space on our backup tapes. Bit of a sticky wicket wot?

If you have physical space on another server but don't want to migrate Exchange to it, you can specify that as your temp folder when doing the compact - see earlier posts on the subject.

How much white-space is listed in the 1221's? If not much and the tapes aren't full yet then just have people clean up the mailboxes and wait on the defrag. If nobody has cleaned out mail the 1221 is prob pretty low and the database will grow right back in no time. If its full then it is full and a defrag won't help. Check the 1221's and go from there.
