Informatica's LOOKUP Stage

Hi,

I'm new to informatica and got confused with usage of lookup files in informatica. Can anyone please explain me with a small example of lookup stage in informatica. advantages and need for creating lookup file? Is lookup file is similar to Hash file of datastage?
What exactly the difference of these two and how they are handling or work when records are passed through?
Please help me.
