Note: I have 2 other posts, if you respond to this one then you will solve other issues.

I just recently installed exchange2k server on a windows 2000 member server. The windows 2000 server is a member of a windows 2003 domain. When I try to start any exchange services under services I recieve the fallowing error message:

1. "Could not start the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service on Local computer. Error 1068: The dependecy service or goup failed to start"

The reason for me starting the service is because when i go to the exchange manager my first storage group is down with red arrows. When I try to mount the mail box the option is clear. An error message is also recieved when trying to expand on the first storage group and it is as fallows:

2. "The action could not be completed becuase the MS Exchange Info. Shore service is unavailable. Be sure the service is running and you have connectivity to the MS Exchange Server comp.

Operation: Retrieving mount information.
ID no: c1041721
Exchange System manager"

Can someone please help me.

Greatly Appreciate your help,

This is usually an Exchange System Attendent issue. Start that service on its own and see what happens. Is the logon account ok for it / is account unlocked?

Anything in Event Viewer?

Try netdiag /v on the Exchange box too.

I did try running the exchange service on its own and it did the same when I ran it from the services. When I restart my server exchange server box it gives me an error before I logon. The error is:

"At least one service or driver failed during system startup. Use event veiwer to examine the event log."

Thanks for your response,

Please help I'm a newbie at his!

Note: there are 4 different event viewer errors in the event viewer they are as fallows:

1.

"Service control
Event ID: 7001

The Microsoft Exchange IMAP4 service depends on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start."

2.
"Service control
Event ID: 7001

"The Microsoft Exchange POP3 service depends on the Microsoft Exchange Information Store service which failed to start because of the following error:
The dependency service or group failed to start."

3.
"Service control
Event ID: 7001

The Microsoft Exchange MTA Stacks service depends on the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service which failed to start because of the following error:
%%0"

4.
"Service control
Event ID: 7001

The Microsoft Exchange Information Store service depends on the Microsoft Exchange System Attendant service which failed to start because of the following error:"
%%0

5.
service control: SMTPSVC
Event ID: 105

The server was unable to register the administration tool discovery information. The administration tool may not be able to see this server. The data is the error code.

I tried running these on there own and it gave me the same error message as fallows:

Could not start the MsExchange service on Local computer. Error 1068: The dependecy service or goup failed to start"

Thanks

OK, clear the application and system logs. Then start the Exchange System Attendent ONLY.

What errors do you get. Check the logon information for that service. Run netdiag /v.

How do you start the Exchange System Attendent?

Thanks,

The fallowing is the event viewer error messages:

1.
"Source: MsExchange SA
event: ID 1005

Unexpected error The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted. Facility: Win32 ID no: c007054b Microsoft Exchange System Attendant occurred."

2.
"MsExchangeDSAccess
ID 2064

Process MAD.EXE" (PID=1240). All the remote DS Servers in use are not responding."

Tese are the two errors I see in the event viewer.

Ok,

I ran the netdiag /v. Out of so much to read, I saw only two errors. The fail task was read as fallows:

1. Testing Kerberos authentication... Failed

2. Kerberos test. . . . . . . . . . . : Failed
Cached Tickets:
Server: krbtgt/DOMAIN.COM
End Time: 7/26/2005 3:52:44
Renew Time: 8/1/2005 17:52:44

Please note: I substitiuted Domaim.com with my original domain to keep it confadential.

ok, set the system attendant service to local system and see if that helps.

1. How do you set the system attendant to the local system?

2. It looks life I'm missing the ms mail connector interchange service, because I dont see it. I tried installing it and I cant install it. It does not let me because of the fallowing error:

"Setup failed while installing sub component MSMail connector Interchange with error code 0xc0070548(please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed step agian."

Do you think it might have something to do with it? And what should I do to solve this issue?

Thanks,

Do you need the MS Mail connector? If you are not connecting to an internal ms mail server you don't need it.

Go to services. Double click the System Attendant. Go to Logon. See who it is trying to connect as. Note that down. Make sure you know the password. Change it to local system account. Apply, OK. Start the service.

Report back...

What does ms connector do? How does it operate?

Thanks,

Erm, it is a connector. It connects Exchange directly to an MS Mail Server inside your organisation.

If you don't have one of those, you definitely don't need it.

O.k let me try the process that you wrote to me before. I will let you know if it worked.

Thanks,

I Change it to the local system account. And put in a pawword. I press apply and ok. Restarted the service and got the fallowing error:

"Could not start the MS Exchange system attendant service on the local computer. The service did not return an error. This could be an internal windows error or an internal service error. If the problem persists, contact your systems admin."

Any clue?

should I redo it again and delete the password and click on apply amd ok?

I got the same error message as I stated above.

I hitting this topic last minute so if you have done some of these things before sorry in advance.

You mentioned that you could get to the Mailbox Store, but the option to mount is is unavailable. Can you click on Properties? if so check to see where the Database engine is stored (i.e. C:\Program Files\Exchsrvr\MDBDATA\priv1.edb). If there is nothing there than you exchange system has not been set up properly. Hence it won't start.

I also see that you said that is it is a member server of a 2003 enviroment. Just to clairify did you run the AD wizard and join as a "slave" domain controller. If not than you will have 2 servers fighting to hand out the DNS and then have conflicts galore. It could be one of the reasons that your exchange is not starting as it relies on DNS to operate properly.
