Recently I have started receiving emails from friends saying they are updating their address book, please fill out this form. The form requests too much information: name, address(s), birthday, etc. And links to sign up for some kind of communication services, also a link to set up my own "address book" with the same service provider. I have not responded to these requests as I am suspicious that they may be more than just the friendly little service they are represented to be.

Can anyone educate me on this topic? [bigears]
Thanks!

To begin with, I'd give wide berth to anything coming into my inbox requesting personal info. Go with your gut...this smacks of scam.
Could you please post back with the name of the service/company identified in the emails.

Back in my "younger," less suspicious years I was guilty of filling things similar to this. Nothing bad that I know of came from it, but I never used my real info. The only thing I ever put on the line was a free netscape email address, so I didn't have much to lose.

I would be very suspicious of such a service though, especially if its free. Like the poster above said, knowing the name of this service would be the best way to find out if its dangerous.

Thanks for confirming my gut feeling. I didn't write down the names before hitting the delete key.

I appreciate your response and will collect names to post here the next time something like that comes in.
