Hi,

I have a question? Why the private IP address used for network always start with 192.168.x.x or 10.x.x.x?? Is it industry standard??

I read from one of the post. There have 3 group that use for private IP address which are:

10.0.0.0 to 10.255.255.255
172.16.0.0 to 172.31.255.255
192.168.0.0 to 192.168.255.255

Are this correct? Pls advise!

Cheers!

hi,

the three sets of ip addresses you've mentioned are private ip addresses for the the 3 classes of ip addresses. those ip addresses are used to set up a internal ip network...
say for example you were only given two valid ip addresses, to accomodate all other computer in the ip network you have to use those private ip addresses..

anyway here are the different classes of ip addresses:
Class A addresses begin with 0xxx, or 1 to 126 decimal.
Class B addresses begin with 10xx, or 128 to 191 decimal
Class C addresses begin with 110x, or 192 to 223 decimal
Class D addresses begin with 1110, or 224 to 239 decimal
Class E addresses begin with 1111, or 240 to 254 decimal

i am not really good in explaining, but you can try some sites...

Yes Sibeliusto it is standard that was established for intranets and private networks. In every class you have one range that is reserved for this purpose.Depending how big is your network and how many LANs you want depends class you will take. For example if you have lot's of computer you will use first class and reserved range that you mentioned 10.0.0.0
to 10.255.255.255.Why?Because than you have lot's of free add. for hosts, infact last 3 octets. As i know there is also range that i saw companies are using 131.107.0.0 to 131.107.255.255.
Read TCP/IP from Brian Komar and you will get whole picture very clear!
Hope I help...
