Indexing using XML

Is anyone aware of way to embed index references within an XML file so those appear when you import that XML file? Or is there way to automate a means to apply index terms to XML tags so that the content is automatically referenced as index terms when an XML file is imported?

Any help is appreciated, be an additional plug-in or InDesign's native capablities.
