Indexed pass through?

Access 2003, SQL 2000

Is there a way to add an index to the results of a basic select pass through query in Access? It's then being used in another query that uses data from other sources.

I typically insert the result set from a pass-through into an MS Access table then index.

Thank you. I was thinking that might be the only way to do it, I just thought I'd ask first in case there was another way.
