Question....Is there some settins I need to set to have a website display a default index page instead of listing the contents of the "folder".

i.e

if I type something like - The index page should display instead of listing the contents.

This would be a setting of your web server, not the browser. Suggest you ask in the relevant forum for your web server.

Hope this helps,
Dan

Like Dan says this is a web server causing this,
Are you using Apache or IIS?

Make sure the index file is named either,
index.html
or
index.htm

alternatively if your are writing your index page in another langauage i.e. PHP, make sure the conf file (In Apache) knows to look for index.php
