How does the search and indexing on fileshares work with Microsoft's Enterprise Search model? Is this only filename specific or can the indexer search within documents ?
If it was to be of any use, then people would have already had to name the file something specific rather than just Doc A or Proposal.doc ?

I'm fairly new to SharePoint (2007) but I believe that even the standard version indexes using the filename, meta data (tags) and file content.

Note that to index on file content the search service needs to know how to read the file type. But it can do this by default for a load of standard types (text files, Word docs, PDFs etc) and you can add extra ones as required. I can't remember where the settings for this are as I am at home so can't access the SharePoint area I'm working on.

There's probably something in the SharePoint How To on the Microsoft site but office.microsoft.com seems to playing up at the moment (for me at least).
