Indesign PDF export PPI reduction quality

Hi,
I have col .tiff imported from psp set to 400ppi
The printer's output to PDF requires 300ppi
Is it better to just output from Indesign and set the lower ppi or will the quality be better if I first reduce the 400ppi to 300ppi in photoshop and then reimport into Indesign and then output the PDF.
Are there issues of image degradation if I simply output the 400ppi down to 300ppi for the printer in ID?

If you export to PDF/X-1a, there is no issue here. PDF/X-1a settings in InDesign drop the resolution to 300 ppi.

The only reason why you might want to decrease the resolution of an image in Photoshop prior to placing in InDesign is if it has some insanely large resolution ...such as 2400 ppi when you only need 300. A larger than necessary image can steal system resources.

400 ppi is nothing to worry about.

Thanks, but what is PDF/X-1a?
I am using indesign v2.01 and the export just says PDF.

On the Id File meny do you have PDF Export Presets. I'm not familiar with ID2, adopted ID at 3.

If you have that menu item the proper esport is there. X-1a is simply a standard for a pdf - ensuring that things comply to standards. The "Press" preset will also downsample the images to 300 but won't dheck for compliance.

If you don't have the Presets on the menu, you should get your pdf options after clicking the Save button. Under compression set to 300. Undr Advanded, make sure that the color output matches the document and that Transparency Flattener is set to High.
