In my page palette, my pages show white (as usual), obviously with the corresponding page number on it. I am a new user and putting together a 60 page document. Strangely however, 5 or 6 of my pages are showing grey and white checkers, as if there is no background, very much like a photoshop file with no background. What's more, the pages that appear like this seem to appear darker in my document i.e. the text is slightly thicker and darker. This is worrying me. Anyone seen this? Probably very basic, but I'm confused.

The checkerboard pattern that you see in the pages palette indicates that you have used a transparency feature on that page. The slightly thicker and darker effect that you see is simply how InDesign is presenting a preview of the transparency effect. This difference should only be seen on screen and might be modified in Edit>Preferences>Display. Your print should be fine. Don't trust me though: as a new user, you should test printing a single page with transparency effects so that you can confirm that your printer/RIP can support the effects.
