I try to open an illustrator file in my indesign and I get
a error saying that Indesign does not support the format.
Is this strange or what? A plug in may be missing.
Does anyone know what this plug in is? I have Indesign CS2
and Illustrator 10. I didn't think this would make a difference. I would appreciate any help on this and thank you in advance.

you can place Illustrator files but you can't open them.

I am sort of new to this. But can you please explain a
bit more in layman terms? Place...drap and drop?

File menu > Place.

This is how page layout applications have behaved for the past 10 years. If page layout is new to you, you should review the manual to get your feet wet before diving head first.

Thank you. I figured. There were so much to remember and
yes I am new to illustrator. I thought this would be a friendly place to go to find out. I am sorry to have bothered you so. I didn't have a manual. And I am not afraid to dive in and learn something.

He is the figure for those looking for a simple answer:

Save your Illustrator file as AI. This Native format is most compatible with InDesign.

Then go back to InDesign, click on your document using your Picture Frame Rectangle tool (the one with the X through it).

Fill in the desired size (can be adjusted later).

Go to File menu > Place.

Find and select the Illustrator file in the window that opens.

Click the Open button.

Adjust size, & position of your image using the Direct Selection tool (white arrow), and the cropping with the Seclection tool (black arrow.

Thank you again for you asistance, however I found another forum that gave me the correct answer and were friendly when they did so. I will stay with that forum.

I am sorry to have bothered you so.

Who said anyone was bothered? The tek-tip that was offered to you was to assist you, not to insult you. Surely you would find it more beneficial to know answers quickly from a manual or a taught course than to wait for a reply in a forum. You are welcome to ask as many basic questions as you would like. The help that was offered to you was to show you how to find answers more quickly.

Quit insulting those that try to help you.

I didn't have a manual.

Yes, you do. It is found under the help menu. If you purchase your software instead of pirating it, you are provided with a manual.

Jim - I did not think you were insulting at all. Maybe that quote is referring to me. I can't tell someone's level of knowledge regarding a program unless they state it. If I give info in baby steps and the person is somewhat familiar with the program, they'd be insulted that I was treating them like a beginner. If I don't, they're insulted that I didn't explain it in detail. You just can't win with some people.

I assumed zkristeen thought I was the bothered and unfriendly one since they already responded to you in post #3. Had you been crusty, they would have let you know then.

We're just teaching a person to fish... [bigsmile]
