InDesign Index from database RTF download

Just to preface - I am not a tech person, just a designer wth some surface tech knowledge. We have a database download that can be flowed into Quark as a styled document with Index markers by using a plug-in called Indextension. We are considering moving to IDCS and want to have the index auto-generated in a similar way. I've looked at the Indesign Tagged Text tags and they seem too complex for what we need to do...we don't need the index info to come in styled just marked as an index entry. Does any one know how I would write the tags to just mark text as an index entry in InDesign?
