Can anyone tell me if there is anyway to open InDesign 2.02 files in InDesign CS2? (PC versions) Haven't been able to upgrade to CS2 because trying to open a V2.02 file crashes my system. Any suggestions welcome!

Is it possible to open up an InDesign cs2 document using inDesign 2.02?

FlyKids, yes - try downloading a demo to be certain in regard to your particular INDD file. The file may simply be corrupted.

Cheznous, no.

I have InDesign CS2 (v4.0.2) loaded on one PC and InDesign 2.02 loaded on another. Some 2.02 files will open in CS2 and others won't. Can't find any common factor to indicate the source of the problem. When I try to open some files, I get an error message that reads: The instruction at "0x4f79d17c" referenced memory at "0x00000014". The memory could not be "read". Other files open without any problem.

Do the troubled files open in 2.x? Once open can you resave them as a copy and try those copies in 4.x?

Memory errors may also happen upon reading in corrupted accessory data, such as fonts and links. Try opening the file in 2.x, assign all fonts to something basic like Arial, save, open in 4.x and restore the styles to the original fonts.

Thanks for the suggestion, I will give it a try. Some files have lots of defined character styles so this will take some effort but I'd rather not "lose" these valuable files if at all possible.

If you use a font manager, you can disable all fonts but your system fonts and then try opening the document. This is easier than wrestling with a lot of defined styles.

Opened my InDesign 2.02 file and turned off all the fonts except Arial using Adobe Type Manager and saved it as a new file. Also went into the file and changed all the defined styles to Arial and saved as a new file name.

Neither file would open in InDesign CS2. I am baffled!
