Hi, can anyone tell me how to use nested styles to set up a numbered list that updates automatically (so that if I add an extra step I don't have to renumber)? I'm using InDesign CS. The paragraph styles box doesn't have a bullets and numbering option as in later versions of InDesign so I guess I'm stuck with using a nested style. I've figured out bullets but can't get numbers working.

In CS, bullets and numbering is the last item in the paragraph style options window.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

I'm using Indesign on windows XP, and there is no bullets and numbering option on the paragraph styles options window.

When I launch this menu, it doesn't have the bullets and numbering option on it. Last item on the list is Paragraph Rules.

Well, try this:

with text paragraph selected with text tool, make a new Paragraph style. This style has the same parameters as the paragraph you've just selected.

Now double click the name of this style (Paragraph style palette) and you'll get the dialog with plenty of parameters; one of them should be 'bullets and numbering'.

If that fails, I'll give up. However, hope it works on your machine.

When i open the Paragraph Style Options dialog there is no Bullets and Numbering option.

Think it must be an old version or something.

Why would something as simple as a numbered list be so obscure and tricky?

Thanks for your time anyway Wujek.

Hi,

CS1 version doesn't include the bullets and numbering option. With CS2 it is included.

Check your install CD's if you have a CD that says Pagemaker plugins (I think that is what it is)

If you have this CD the bullets and numbering plugin is on this CD, just install it and you will have your bullets.
