When I export an InDesign CS2 document to PDF it only accepts file names with 8 characters. If I try to export a file with more than 8 characters in the file name, it creates the file empty, and creates an other file with 8 characters in the file name.

For exemple, if i export a PDF file and name it adobepdftest.pdf InDesign creates 2 files. One is called adobepdftest.pdf with the size of 0 Kb and is not able to open. It also creates a file called ADOBEP~1.PDF that contains the information I wanted to export as a PDF.

Notice! This problem only occur when I export my PDF file to a Novell NetWare server, and I do not have problems to save or export files with long file names from other programs to the same server. I can also print the PDF file without problems, but when I print the PDF I can not configure the PDF as preferred.

When I export the PDF file to a Microsoft server or locally stored on the computer, it woks fine. But since we are using Novell Servers at work, this is not a possible solution. We are using Novell Netware server version 6 and 6,5. The problem occurs on both. I think that the export function have problems understanding Novells server file system.

Has anyone else had this problem? Do you know how to solve it? Please help me understand this.

Best regards
Teresia

This problem relates to WHERE you are trying to save the PDF. On some network drives, only 8 characters are allowed. Try exporting to your local drive and then you can copy the PDF to a network drive.
