I am finishing an 800 page book which i have designed as a Indesign book. When I closed the "book palette", it used to ask me if i want to save the changes. Lately it didin't anymore so I figured all is ok since I save the documents every time I close them. I have to say that all the time, I was opening the documents from "book palette" and not from my Documents folder.
Now I've found out that all the original documents were saved last time 1 month ago and if i open them (from my Documents folder), they open in their old version. But if I open them from "Book palette", they are perfecty ok.

What does that mean? How can I save the changes to the original documents? If i click save button on "book palette", it only saves the book but not the documents themselves.

If anybody has an answer I'll be very gratefull.

First, I'd click on one of the documents in the book and pick Document Information from the flyout menu. See if the path to the doc is the same as it is to your documets folder. If by some chance you packaged any doc in the book, a new folder will have been created with that doc in it, giving you 2 copies of the doc. The same will hold true if you packaged the book.

I'm guessing that you inadvertently creaste 2 copies of your docs.
