I have a 48 page document whose pagination and numbering changes frequently. I decided to use the book utility within InDesign CS2. To put it mildly....it is driving me nuts. The book pagination is out of sequence as well as the document itself. I seperated the 48 page document into 4 InDesign documents and then brought them into the 'book'. At which time at manually moved those pages that needed to be repaginate for the next issue. I then engaged automatic pagination with auto numbers enabled. This 48 page document is a mess. Working on this for 3 straight days. I am at the end of my rope and unfortunately may resort to moving the moving the page tree within the 48 page doc.

Can anyone point to an online source which explains extensively on the correct operation of the InDesign Book. It sounds like a wonderful and powerful tool but as of yet it appears to be very confusing.

Any Help would be appreciated.

Thank you

To repaginate, it's easier to use the pages window and drag the things to where you want them.

Another simple trick it to open the 48 page doc and then create a new 1 page doc. Go to Window menu/arrange/tile so that both docs are visible. Then drag the page (s) you need from the 48 page doc to the 1 page doc. The pages will be added to the one page doc in the order you insert them. When done, trash the first, blank, page.

jmgalvin,

I was thinking on those similar lines...but only as a last resort. Your email confirms that it just might be the best way to go. Why there is so little info on the 'Book' feature for InDesign CS2 is beyond me. Even my reference manuals only touch upon this tool....its suppose to do indexes, TOC, and automatic repagination amongst workgroups.

Maybe Adobe can make the Book interface a bit more usable and less flaky. Framemaker, Interleaf and other publishing tools always took advantage of book creation and its ease and power of use. Most important the global, indexing and TOC generation as well as batch conversion should be highlighted but then again how many users use InDesign for Multi page books and volumes of hardcopy info.

Thanks for your time and quick response.

The Book function in InDesign is not for pagination, but rather to take large documents (or publications) and make them more manageable by breaking them into separate documents. For instance, you might have each chapter of a book as a separate InDesign file. But, when it comes to printing, exporting, changing styles, etc. you might not want to have to open each, but work with all those chapter docs...the Book features allows you to do that.

If you're working in version CS2, what you're looking for to paginate is InBooklet SE (under the File menu). That allows you to keep your 48 page doc in single pages (or however you like to work), use the Auto Page numbering feature and either print a paginated file or save the paginated version as a new, untitled document. InBooklet SE is great for saddle-stitched documents especially...for more robust features, you might look into Imposer Pro.

I hope that helps...let me know if you need it explained in more detail...

Ekwoman,

I thought InBooklet SE was for imposition for pre press. didn't know I could compose a large doucment with other individual docs/files. Sounds like the thing I may be looking for. I will investigate further.

Thank you for your time and effort.
