How do I increase the size of the root '/' filsystem? I currently have 6GB but format shows that I have an additional 12GB unused. I would like to use all of the space for a total of 18GB.

How do I do this please? I know there are some instruction somewhere but could not find it so I'd appreciate some help whether a direction to the link or a worded answer.

Thanks. The ONE ( HP-UX + Solaris + AIX + Tru64 = Unix)

You can copy non system files to unused partition 12GB.
And you can save all the logfile to unused partition.
You can keep more space for root partition.
So You can have more space for your root filesystem.
You can use Volume Manager from Veritas.
But you should buy this software.
Good Luck

make an other partition, newfs on it, mkdir /data, mount the partition on /data. ------------ jamisar

I've sucessfully extended the root filesystem using Solstice Disksuite before. If I remember correctly, the machine is supposed to be in single-user mode to do this. Regards.

Thanks guys but I was more hoping for some info on how to combine the root partition '/' along with the unused, unformatted partition of 12GB into one partition of 18GB.

wongyc2k:
this is not correct!
if you are on a standard unix ( no veritas, no disksuite, no what ever you want) you have NO CHANCES to resize /.
so
1) you make the trick with links, this is very good,
next time you install the OS, you just have to remake
the links, this means: you do not LOOSE the OS NON
NATIVE files, sure you should prevent the installer to
newfs that dirs.
2) you reinstall the OS !

that's all!! ------------ jamisar

Without any volume manager (veritas / solstice / xyz) one cannot extend the size of root file system, no matter whatever free space available on the disk..

Only one trick could be that u try moving the non stystem files / data to other filesystem and try to creaet some free space.

Otherwise, reinstall the OS with fresh and bigger root partition.

Well, you can resize root partition, BUT........

First, you should backup / partition.

Second, reboot the system with CD-ROM, in order to you can handle partition.

Third, run format and erase / partition. Create new partition with new size.

Finaly, restore backup on new partition and change bootloader for boot using new partition.

Regards.
