increasing item decimal places in GP

Is increasing the item currency decimal in the backend, safe to do? The client is not scheduled to post their unposted transactions. Hence, I would like to ask if there would be an impact if we do the update in the backend?

Hoping to hear from anyone soon. Thanks.
