Increased activity between handheld and desktop

Blackberry 7230 with Desktop Director and Outlook 2000.
Since performing a restore today the activity between Handheld and Outlook is almost continous with the handheld showing data in and out, and Outlook showing a continual stream of communications from blackberry.net which are processed immediately . This happens whether the handheld is connected to the pc or not. It is not just when I receive a message but virtually all the time.
Any suggestions?
