I have a Networker server running on NT4 sp6a that has dual p3 xeon 866's, 1.75gb of ram, on gigabit fiber. I have a 61gb backup that is running 1 hour 15 minutes on it, but I need to try to get it slightly faster. (VP wants it at 1 hour, lucky me)

When this backup runs, My two processors spike at 100%, but memory usage remains constant at less than 10% utilization. Is this a limitation in Legato that I can't get by, or is there some way to cache some of this out to memory and actually get my moneys worth for the hardware in this box?

Also, I am backing up to 4 DLT8000 drives in a jukebox. My problem is not so much the write speed on the tapes as it is the heavy load being placed on the CPU's. I'm concerned that it will negativily impact other backups that run at that time.

That is seems to be pretty dam quick I'd be interested to know your config ! ie networkr ver and library type. Did you get any reponses to you problem or fix it yourself?

The client has it's largest data set in a directory three levels under the root so I had to get creative. I created three virtual clients that back it up.

"Client 1" backs up 17 of the largest files in that directory.
"Client 2" backs up the rest of the directory with a directive to skip the 17 files.
"Client 3" backs up the rest of the server with a directive to skip that directory.

What I ended up with is three clients that back up 20 gigs each.

It works fantastic in testing, but is a bit slower in production due to contention with other backups. It's still significantly faster than an "all" backup. I had to limit the number of streams total to 21 due to some bug that causes Legato to just ignore any sets over 21.
