I am currently in a Shared environment where the server is set to GMT, but I am in EST. I set the virtual date to be EST and everything sees it except MySQL. Is there a switch or a setting that I can use to make MySQL see EST instead of GMT?

I'm in an environment (through Verio) where I am basically renting a section of a box. For all intents and purposes, the box appears to be dedicated. If I type date, it shows me EST, if I type virtual date, it shows me EST, but the actual machine date is GMT - I don't have access to the root so I can not see GMT, I'm just taking Verio's word for it. MySQL is reading the actual machine date rather than the date my environment is set up for.
