We have third-party MICR cartridges used for printing checks for our business. For a new location with a new HP 4240 cartridge we use in other HP printers we are receiving a message "Incorrect Supply Installed". I'm assuming HP has changed something to keep third-party remanufactured toner cartridges out of their printers. Any workarounds?

You are aware that most "HP" MICR cartridges are supposed to be used on MICR modified printers too ?
Most MICR printers have slightly different controller/formatter or dimm solution that allows them for a speed increase and use of the high capacity MICR toners.
Now...
This new printer of yours has it been modified to accept MICR toners ?
I would expect that this is required for the toner to work or it will be reported as incorrect toner because it is not recognized as a "valid" HP toner.

Wow... that's news to me. I mean, I know that HP has been putting some chips into their newer printers/toner cartridges so that you have to buy "valid" HP toner.... but, to my knowledge, MICR toner carts, as far as operation, are the same. My wife has had laser printers with MICR carts for ages, and we never had to modify the printer.

I would imagine that curtismo's 3rd party MICR carts are refurbs, and therefore just don't have the HP genuine chip in it. If he talks to his supplier, and the supplier gives him refilled HP carts with MICR toner, he'll probably be fine.

Of course, I may be totally wrong about everything. ;-)

(it wouldn't be the first time)

Interesting read. So, this allows for switching of the normal cart for a MICR cart, and automatically senses when MICR ink is installed... looks like it also loads the MICR fonts.

The price difference where my wife worked for a standard cart vs. a micr cart was minimal; so they just used the micr cart on the printer they printed checks on.

hpwizzard: Dude... where/how do you FIND that stuff? I mean, I can pretty much hold my own with HP printers, but you're just a fountain of information!
