I am using ArcServe 2000/Sony autoloader on Win2k Server & domain. The GFS rotation works well except I now need to periodically make changes to the monthly backup. On months when the last day of the month is not a Friday, I need to reduce the PCs/servers in the backup source because the full backup runs too long so isn't complete before users need their PCs the following day. It seems like if I cancel a monthly backup or try to reconfigure the source PCs for only a particular month that I will be making the change for the entire GFS rotation which I do NOT want to do. Would it work to cancel the particular monthly backup and then recreate a seperate job for only the servers I want the full backup for and utilize the same monthly media tapes or will that hose up the media pool forcing me to manually move around the tapes to the proper pool. Does that make sense?

Hi,
Sounds like a good idea to me and also like the only option if you don't want to make any changes to your GFS. If you make a separate job the tape will not be a part of your media pool but that is not the main point here I guess. What you can do to keep these tapes in your media pool is the following:
Say the last day of the month is on a Wednesday. To "trick" arcserve to prompt for the Monthly backup tape on the Friday on the previous week you can work with exclusions. Select Modify on your GFS job and in click on the schedule tab. In there you will find Exceptions tab. Click on this tab and click on Add. Here you will now set the backups for Wednesday, Tuesday and Monday as exeptions. This will trick arcserve and it will then prompt you to mount the "monthly" backup tape on Friday.
It is a bit of overhead but it is a solution to your problem.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thank you for your response. I'm not sure how I'm going to handle it, I guess. I can force ArcServe to make the last day of the month a monthly backup, request the correct tape and then cancel it. Then create a new job for servers only, save it, and use that for the actual Monthly Backup. I suppose I'll then need to move the tape to the Monthly Save Set manually. Will that work or will the GFS rotation in regards to the Monthly Backup media get hosed? The point is, that I do not want to mess with my current configuration of Source data and the GFS rotation to accommodate the relatively few months where the last day falls on a day other than Friday (full backup).

However you do this you're going to mess with your GFS configuration, because you don't want/can't do it the "standard" way.
In 2007 you have 7 month ends that are not Friday or on the weekend so it's not just a few as you wrote.
There are many ways to manipulate Arcserve to allow you to get it done your way. But then you kind of like beat the purpuse with a GFS rotation. I would suggest that you review your requirements and then use the backup rotation that works best for you.

I hope you find this post helpful.

A little nasty, but ok I get your point.

Thanks
