HI, I run a backup of 100 users everynite. I tried restoring a file today but I have no files to restore. It's like no catalog was created. Althgouh there was a job log created lastnite and indicates which tape was used. I tried to catalog the tape but that failed with error below. The wierd part is, the backup jobs after that job were backed up and i am able to restore those computers. I need help, need to restore. Thanks in advance.

THE ERROR:
Error code : a00084ca HEX
Error description : The data being read from the media is inconsistent.
*** This is a new tape

I'm not sure you'll be able to restore. However, you do need to find out what happened. It looks (to me) like something interrupted the backup (power surge/outage, loss of connection, etc).

What time did the backup take place?
What was being backed up?
What else happened at that time?
- did the sysadmin/network admin have a job running then (maintenance)?
- is there anything indicating a power surge/outage at that time?
What does the Windows Event Log show? How about the BE Job History?

I checked everything you mentioned, everything is just the way it is suppose to be. We did not have power failure or any other failures either. I ran the same backup job 1 hr ago, everything was good, i was able to see the catalogs and restore files. Thanks, keep them suggestions coming.

SqlBill,
Just for future reference, I re-created the jobs that were not being backed up correctly and re-ran the backup lastnite. Everything seems to be working...Finally.
Thanks for your help.

I've the same problem.

I just installed a new IBM 3583 with one LTO 2 drive and 36 medias.... (Backup exec 9 for win 2K (sp3)rev. 4454)
The log is:
Job Completion Status
Job ended: Tuesday, September 09, 2003 at 3:12:56 PM Completed status: Failed Final error code: a00084ca HEX Final error description: The data being read from the media is inconsistent.

Final error category: Backup Media Errors

Errors
Verify - C: An inconsistency was encountered on the storage media in IB

I tried this morning, with the Veritas guy, to remove the Veritas drivers and install the new 5055 drivers revision....same problem. All my firmware are up to date...I've triple checked.

The guy at Veritas is telling me that I must suspect my drive. We've created a backup to file job and it ran successfully.....

There's an event ID 57612 in my event viewer but I found a couple of non interesting documents. I changed those valued (tape format)from 0 to 1 without success...I reverted back this key.

Finally, removable storage service is disabled.

Any idea ?! :)

Hope to hear from you soon !

You can always restore, even if the catalog is corrupt. You should try to catalog the tape manually. This will take a long time as the tape will be read file for file. Uncheck the option "use storage-media based catalogs" to create a new catalog.
