I am using XP pro on my workstations and Server 2003 server using DHCP. I also have a mixed infrastructure (wireless and wired) network running linksys routers and DSL.

I’m having strange connectivity issues with my internet connection as well as access to my internal network. In some instances after login on, I will be unable to access the internet. When I go to view all network connections it shows me that the internet connection is disabled. Clicking the enable option does nothing. Sometimes if I disable and enable my network connection it will clear the problem. Sometimes I need to do this multiple times before I can regain access to the internet. Sometimes I cannot and have to reboot the system and then go through the disable/enable process again. Sometimes I have to unplug my DSL and linksys routers to clear the problem. During all this fun, there are sometimes that I cannot access my network shared drives. The error tells me that my login name could not be authenticated. Again, I go through the disable/enable routine.

Another odd behavior is that I not be able view my mapped shared network drives. When I check them in explorer I can see the shared mapped drives but when I click on them, it tells me I do not have permissions. Sometimes if I go to network neighbor hood and drill down through the entire neighborhood I can access the shared drive. Once I do that I can then access my mapped shared drive. Sometimes I have no problems at all and can login and have access everything without any issue.

One vendor of my wireless NIC indicated that this is a bug in XP SP2 and recommended I download a patch “WindowsXP-KB884020-x86-enu”. After installing this patch it appeared to help a little but I’m still having the same issues.

If anyone else has had this problem I’d like to hear from you and what you have tried to resolve this.

With Auditing enabled, the various items in the Event Viewer Security Log contain a wealth of information which may assist you, not to mention what else is available from the System folder.
