I have windows XP Home Edition. I end my work by turning off the PC via the start bar and the "turn off computer" signs. If the phone rings the PC switches on.

To get round this I have to swich the power off at the wall.

Any suggestion on how to thwart this phantom switch-ons.

It sounds like the phone is triggering the modem so that you could connect from a remote laocation. Have a look in the BIOS for a setting "Wake on modem" or something of that order. Make sure any such settings are disabled.

If you have the manual for your computer take a look at it, there will be instructions for turning off "Wake Up on Call" (or something similar) in the BIOS.

If you do not have the manual then you can take a look at the bios yourself. When you fist switch your PC on you will see some tests being performed such as memory and detecting HD, CD's etc.. At this time you should see something like "Press Del for Setup".

Press the button it says and it should take you into a crude looking screen, this is where you can change several settings relating to your machine. BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU CHANGE IN HERE. Take a look in the various screens and you should see the relevent setting.

I am away from my PC for a few days and will try these suggestions when I return.

I had been previously advised to look into - Start, contol panel, phones & modems, modems, properties, power management. Then unclick the "Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby" button.

As the button was already unclicked that did not help much.
