I am trying to use DirectX 8.1 in my Visual C++ program on Windows XP. My question is: Do I need to download DirectX 8.1 SDK onto Windows XP? It appears to me that XP has the DirectX runtime on it but you can't use it to develop. Is this true? If I have to download the SDK, do I need to delete the runtime that is on XP or do I need to download only components of DirectX 8.1? How do I get a SDK for C++ on my XP? What do I need to do?

here the link to dx 8.1 sdk
