Pushing the hold button while programing in a 1 button number does not seem to program in a pause or delay. Please someone, tell me the trick.

Pressing the "hold" button while programming an outside auto-dial or speed dial sequence - only creates a 1.5 secong pause. Maybe, that is too short - to make your connection. You can also press "Drop" instead - which will stop the autodial sequence - allowing a longer time for connection. Once connected you can continue the sequence ny pressing the autodial button again.
