Inability to browse the web/rcv e-mail

My 'Network and Dial-up Connections' icon disappeared. I can contact my ISP with my USB modem, but then cannot get any further. I only get rejection messages of different kinds after 30-40 seconds, and my e-mailer 'TheBAT!' just drops off after about 40 seconds. The same modem works fine on an old machine also running W2KPro.

What is the OS? I'd start by going to the "Windows Components" section of "Add/Remove Programs" and removing/reinstalling the dial-up portion. You may have to resinstall the modem afterwards.
