in Vista: how to get rid of capital E with an accent ???

I bought a brand new HP Pavilion Laptop, 17 inches and I have
trouble with the key board. Occasionally, I must be hitting a wrong key and suddenly I can't get a question mark, but I get
a capital E with an accent. What did I do wrong?

Could you cast some light on this problem?

Have you checked that your Input Language is set to English in the Regional and Language Options in Control Panel?

English United States as opposed to English Canada, as that's the only way I got the É to appear in place of the question mark.
