HI!
I have an SSRS 2005 Reporting Services report with a table that has a drill down group. The report opens with the group details suppressed. The report also has interactive sorting set on a couple of column headings. But, when you drill down to the details on a group and then sort one of the columns and expect to see the details within your group sorted by the column you've chosen, instead the group collapses and the details disappear. I've tried playing around with sorting by the group name as opposed to the details, and it's just not working. I'm wondering if anyone else has seen this and whether or not there's a workaround. I hope someone has an explanation or a solution.
Again, what's happening is that when you have a table on an SSRS report that has at least one group with a drill down to detail rows, and you also have interactive sorting on one or more columns (usint the column headings), and the interactive sort is meant to sort the detail columns within the group, when you sort the column, all open groups collapse.
Any explanations, suggestions or work-arounds? Perhaps I only think I'm sorting the details. In Reporting Services, you have sets of information to fill in when you select interactive sorting.
The first is the 'scope' of the sort - (or the 'data region'). In this case I have two choices: I can choose the data source itself to sort, which is pretty self-explanatory. Or the table name also appears in the drop down. I assume that's because you can use the same data source on several objects on the report and you may only want to sort the data as it appears in the one table. In this case, there's only one table on the report, so it shouldn't matter, at least I'd think it wouldn't.
Then there's a drop down for the group or area in which you want the data sorted. One option is Details and the other is the name I've given my one Group, in this case Main_Group. I'm selecting the Details.
Oh . . . there's one other thing . . . . I also have conditional visibility on the details . . . I have a parameter on the report that lets the user collapse or show all details . . . I don't think that matters though, because the group keeps collapsing when I sort no matter how that flag is set and no matter how many groups I happen to have expanded or collapsed.
To make that clear . . . Here's what I expect in the following scenario . . . I've run the report and and everything has displayed with the details collapsed. I expand one group and see a list of 20 detail rows below the group header row. I decide that I want to sort those details, so I click on the header of the column by which I want to sort them (and it's not the column I'm grouping on). What happens is that the group immediately collapses, hiding the details. When I expand it again, the details are sorted the way I've asked, but I can't figure out why the group is collapsing. That's what I need to know. Any suggestions or ideas? Has anyone seen this before?
Thanks,
Karen
